New Findings on Semaglutide and Total Knee Arthroplasty

glp 1 therapies transforming joint replacement and rheumatic care

01/08/2026

According to new findings from the Yale School of Medicine, semaglutide was associated with fewer perioperative complications in patients with type 2 diabetes and knee osteoarthritis scheduled for total knee arthroplasty.

In an observational analysis, researchers assessed overall complication rates, surgical‑site infection and wound complications, 30‑day readmission, length of stay, and early functional recovery. Across the cohort, semaglutide use correlated with lower complication rates and fewer readmissions and showed directional improvements in length of stay and early function versus nonusers.

Perioperative details included lower infection and wound‑complication rates, fewer readmissions, a trend toward shorter hospital stays, and better early functional scores among patients treated with semaglutide.
